Dark Lager

Found in every bar across the Czech Republic, along with the ubiquitous Pilsner, this dark lager is a throwback to the times when all lagers were dark!Yes, all lagers were dark before the 1840s.

Beer colour is greatly influenced by malts and before the industrial revolution, wood ovens and smokers were used extensively to dry malt. This made the malt dark and the resulting dark beers had a roasty coffee like flavour and aroma. Only after the industrial revolution, and the invention of the hot air kilned drum roasters, were maltsters able to dry malts at a lower temperature to produce lighter colour malts that form the basis of lagers we know of today.

We have our own drum roasters at Gateway and we have used a small percentage of highly roasted malt to re-create this dark lager in a unique ‘sparge only’ process. Due to this, the beer is almost black but has a restrained roasty & coffee like character blended with the right amount of caramel & toffee notes balanced with a moderate amount of hop bitterness and a slightly spicy hop character.

It’s crisp & refreshing in a unique way. As they say in the Czech Republic, “Na Zdravi – to your health!”
